Optimism & Pessimism
Exploring my worldview and future perspective
Few words of wisdom are as well known and oft-taught as the self-fulfilling power of a positive outlook, i.e. being optimistic. Along that same line, few wise adages are as strongly supported by research as well.
Research published by Harvard Medical School found that over a 30-year period, optimism was linked to a better outcome than eight measures of physical and mental function and health. Optimism can also be used as a coping strategy, such as repeating "I can do it, I can do it" to oneself when faced with a challenge. It can also reduce feelings of loneliness and depression, which leads to a greater sense of well-being and even a longer life.
« Twixt the optimist and pessimist, the difference is droll: The Optimist sees the doughnut, but the Pessimist sees the hole. »
I am a highly optimistic individual, and I have the potential to enjoy all the above-mentioned benefits. My natural optimism allows me to see opportunities where others see obstacles, and I generally maintain a positive perspective even in difficult situations.
However, I am also aware that too much of a good thing is usually not a good thing. I need to be mindful of the potential for extreme optimism, which can lead to adverse effects.
« I see the world through a prism of possibilities. »
Research shows that unrealistic or extreme optimism may be linked to risky investments and overspending, poor decision making, and downplaying of the need to save money or plan for the future.
A reliance on luck and wishful thinking are examples of coping strategies used by extreme optimists. Unfortunately, these strategies lead to a naive, "rose-colored glasses" perspective of the world and others, and create a distance between perception and reality. It may be a good idea to tone down the optimism when making financial or life-changing plans, such as buying a car or home, quitting a job, or moving a great distance. Hoping for the best while being prepared for the worst may be the best way to avoid extreme optimism.
« I balance my optimism with a dose of realism. »
More often than not, the advice that is often heard and given is that an optimistic outlook leads to better outcomes and a greater sense of well-being and happiness. However, there is a difference between being optimistic about life in general and maintaining that optimism when it comes to facing life's many challenges. Some researchers argue that a person can be optimistic about the former and pessimistic about the latter. This is what we explore in this test as well.
« There are moments when everything goes well; don't be frightened, it won't last. »
Judging from my answers, I am moderately pessimistic. There are benefits to this perspective. Moderate pessimism can encourage living more carefully, taking health and safety precautions.
As I am right in the middle of the pessimism scale, I can reap benefits of healthy pessimism without feeling overwhelmed by it. Some may even argue that moderate pessimism is actually practical realism and may lead to a more accurate evaluation of myself, my actions, and my life.
« I am a realistic optimist. »
I am able to accept my limitations, which can also motivate me to overcome them. Being moderately pessimistic can lead to better studying habits in students and better preparation habits for professionals, for example.
When it comes to decision making, I don't expect that the worst will happen, but I often prepare for it anyway. I evaluate information carefully, looking for possible signs of trouble.
« I prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. »
Once I've decided on an action, I may even selectively use my pessimism as a coping strategy, known by psychologists as "defensive pessimism": if I consciously set low expectations, I can reduce my anxiety and avoid disappointment if things don't work out.
